A thread to discus the second volume of the trilogy. I added the spoiler tag because I know some of you will want to flail about the cliff-hanger ending. (Which is nasty - and I read the book a couple months before TRUTH was released!) Anyways, one of my favorite scenes was the one where the elven brothers were training the rest of the young men and then Vonawyn came out to give them the what-for.

Oh, yes I love that scene. And giving funny hints about what might happen to my brothers made it even more fun. Because boks are better shared.

Of all the character, Derrin annoyed me the most. I mean, I like how his story resolved in TRUST, but in COURAGE, it kinda sagged. It felt like he wasn't there for any reason other than romantic tension, and I don't like that as a plot device. Also, I'm not sure his logic worked right. He was all up in arms over Sirion, but apparently Aedon, who had been Makilien's best friend her whole life, was no threat? (Confession here: I kinda shipped Makilien with Aedon) Personally, I felt that Derrin could have been combined with Aedon and it would have made the romance side of the story much stronger.

Aha so Derrin will turn good again:) that is kinda odd but maybe Derrin could see they weren't anything besides friends and maybe Derrin and Aeden were kinda friends in Reylaun

Fair point, but I still think there was a bit of inconsistency there. *Shrugs*

I think I know why Derrin wasn't jealous of Aeden. Makilien and Aeden are actually cousins. Jaye forgot to mention it somehow. I'm pretty certain. What do other people think?

Hmmm that's an interesting theory, and would make sense, though I'm not sure it completely holds water. But for now, I'll buy it.

It does make sense. And even if they aren't biological cousins, they're honorary cousins. That's what their relationship is like.

I don't think they are cousins. I know I'm the author and should know this, but it's been a long time. But I don't remember making them cousins. However, they did grow up as siblings. Since all of Makilien's siblings before Leiya died, she turned to Aedan as a big brother. So their relationship was always strictly a brother/sister one.

Oh well, I knew there wasn't really much evidence. It was the best I could come up with.

But it still didn't keep me from shipping them, and wondering why Derrin was never threatened by Aedan. Honestly, I expected Sirion/Makilien/Aedan to be the love triangle!

So was anyone else surprised at the plot twist concerning Aedan's father?

I don't remember. I don't seem not be hugely effected by thing in books. Excepts for really sad bits with lots of conflict which make me cry.

So was anyone else surprised at the plot twist concerning Aedan's father? About him still being alive? Sort of, but sort of not. You know, Daniel McHenry, Edward James. But I read Pirates & Faith first, and if I remember right, you read Makilien first.

So ... that's a recurring plot element in her writing? That's interesting to know.
Yes, I read Makilien first. And, to be honest, I've only read the first Pirate book. I have EVERY TEAR on my kindle, but I keep getting distracted and not reading it.

Compared to Truth, this book had a different feel. The description is much better; the characters are deeper; the plot is much more dramatic and exciting. Unexpected plot twists abound – the kind that keep you on the edge of your seat. There is more danger; there are more battles. If you do not enjoy reading battle scenes, you probably will not enjoy this book. The main battle scene, in particular, seemed quite long and drawn out – but it was appropriate to the setting. While there is a slightly stronger element of romance in the book than in its prequel, it is at least not overdone, does not overshadow the main plot, and (at least as far as the main character is concerned) fits well with the storyline and theme of courage. The book does an excellent job of building on the characters developed in Truth. Revisiting some of the places feels like visiting old friends. The interactions and dialogue before the climax begins building are well done, friendly, and realistic.
The strong focus on Elohim begun in Book 1 continues. However, the focus is not so central. Truth is focused on one character finding truth; Courage involves a wider spectrum of people involved in a much larger struggle. The spiritual elements are not as defined and specific, but they are still strongly present. The way that the people allow Elohim to plan their battles and guide their steps no matter what is crucial. The continued trust in only Elohim – for He is the only hope – is beautiful to see. The loyalty between all the characters is inspiring as well – with a healthy dose of treacherous characters involved at various points, making the good/evil contrast strikingly clear.
We get to see much more of Aedan and Sirion’s points of view. While Aedan behaves with uncharacteristic suddenness and dreaminess at a few points (romance...), for the most part the additional viewpoints are quite enjoyable. Along with the other elements of the story, it makes Courage be more involved and require more intellectual engagement than Truth. Truth is an excellent first book; Courage is an excellent second book – for its more involved storyline keeps the reader on the edge of her seat. I for one could not put it down. The surprises thrown in here and there, along with the realistic characters, were gripping. What happens next?

I have EVERY TEAR on my kindle, but I keep getting distracted and not reading it. You haven't read the rest of Pirates & Faith? Well, it's a recurring theme in her Molly Evangeline books. Even in Makilien, Aedan's father isn't the only one...Ryelan, Derrin... That's why I was desperately trying to find a way for {Spoiler} William Altair not to be dead. I mean, she'd done it many times before. But it doesn't really seem to be happening in Ilyon, at least not to the scale of her previous books. But who knows, some supposedly dead characters could show up alive. {Spoiler} Just not William, since she actually had his death scene, unlike Daniel McHenry, who was just going to be hanged in the morning.

I don't blame her. It's fun to have characters come back from death. *Sidewise glance at a certain Bookanian, and a couple Rizkans you haven't met yet* {Spoiler} Especially since he has a grave. Graves rather seal the deal.

Kyrin read the gravesrone, now not even the Doctor can save him.
... And isn't this the COURAGE discussion thread? Not death-defying characters?
