So I was really intrigued by this tv series, and want to know what you guys think!! I had to stop watching it for awhile, because, my goodness!! I just couldn't handle some parts--way too sensitive to stuff like that! But I adore fairytales, and am captivated by this storyline, so I'm wondering . . . do the next seasons get better? Read my review of season one here: shantellemaryh.blogspot.com/2014/10/tv-movie-review-once-upon-time.html

Well I love this series! (But I also loved the plot of the first season. I'm more into the gross stuff which sounds really bad but you get the idea.) To answer your question the second season is about on the same level.

I really liked the first three seasons, but in the last one, while I loved the Frozen storyline, it just seemed like they were running out of ideas. Now, I don't like everything about it, like the Frankenstein episode or the seer that told Rumple he was basically going to ruin his son's life (she creeped me out), but, even though I don't agree with nearly everything, it's never been enough to get me to stop watching. Yeah, it's a kind of weird show, but as a Whovian, I can't complain too much about weird. I like BBC's Merlin better than OUAT now, though.

I'm with you I loved most of the series but some things were a little weird I guess you could say, anyway I love the show I watch it every Sunday night with my mom and sister.

My whole family watched it together every week. The premier came on after AFV when we were in a hotel on vacation, and we were hooked. Not sure if I'm interested enough in the next season to continue, but we'll see. They killed off my favorite character in season 3 and sunk my ship, and I think it got rid of a lot of the family conflict.

Okay, okay, I get it. You guys obviously aren't near as sensitive as me! I guess my biggest question is, is there anymore episodes like the one about Little Red Riding Hood (Red I believe it's called)? Because that was just way too much for me. The Hansel and Gretel episode (well, I fast-forwarded a lot of it), but I could handle it fine. So like, is season two as dark as the first season? Is there more really yucky stuff? Because I kind of want to get back into it, but I'm just not sure ... I want to be warned if there's more stuff that could potentially send me screaming from the room,

You mean the one where Red ate her boyfriend? I don't recall there being anything else like that. I think the Frankenstein episode is in season 2, you probably would like it even less than I did, but I can't remember if there are any important things storywise in that one. And I think the seer is in 2 or 3. I'm not sure exactly how sensitive a viewer you are, so I don't know how much you can take. I'm fairly sensitive, but from your reviews I think you're a good bit more sensitive than I am. I don't think it really gets darker, but I can't remember a whole lot about season 2. There is a lot more about Rumple's son in season 2, which I really liked. Other than that, I remember little of the storyline. I think that one is where Greg and Tamara are trying to get rid of magic, but like I said, I can't remember a lot. And Neverland in season 3 was darker than the Disney Peter Pan, but I don't think it was too dark. The Frozen stuff in season 4 definitely wasn't, it just wasn't as gripping and cliffhanger-y as previous seasons. But it's been awhile since I've watched anything but the most recent stuff.

In the Frankenstein one it had more Regina backstory with Daniel, so yeah, that episode is kind of important.

I guess it did have backstory. But it was still creepy. Probably my least favorite episode.

I'm not as sensitive as you because I wasn't bothered by the whole little red riding hood thing so there might be more than a couple of things like that. I hope this helped!

Thanks so much for the help and information, ladies!! I guess if I start watching it again, I'll just plan on skipping the Frankenstein episode . . . and if I'm confused later, I can always ask you guys what happened! Hehe. Besides the Frankenstein episode, it sounds like I'd pretty much be okay with the rest! I can always fast-forward too,

No, we don't watch it. It says it's a family show, but from what we've seen of it and heard of it, it certainly doesn't seem so. I know I am going against the flow with saying this, but it's personal conviction for us. We try to be very 'strict' with what we put in front of our eyes - "Whatever is pure, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is of good report...think on these things," etc. It seems like a very dark show and we stay away from magic of any kind. I think it's good to be sensitive, Shantelle! We are to be cautious about what we watch/read/see/think because it really affects our whole being.
All that being said, I want to make sure I state that I don't hold others to my personal standard of conviction. I encourage each to pray about their decision. =)

BladeSpinnerRae, so true, Raechel! For sure we need to be careful with everything we watch and read! And yes, we all should pray about things that concern us or whatnot, and let God convict and us and show us what He needs to! Fairytales are hard when it comes to magic, so I'm still trying to muddle through and figure out what I think about it all! Once Upon a Time does has lots of magic stuff in it. I don't strictly stay away from magic, but I realize you have to be very careful with it. ...So yeah, trying to decide if its defined in an okay way or not. Some themes are definitely dark. I'm okay with dark themes, as long as it has a purpose, and good and evil and defined and everything! (My story, Silver Rose, has some dark themes to it . . . you know what I mean?) Anyway, thanks for your thoughts!

Haha, just wanted to clarify, I don't strictly stay away from magic in books and movies. I just realize what I said before sounded kind of bad, like I was saying I don't strictly stay away from magic in real-life. Definitely, I stay away from "magic" in real life!! Because I believe that would be defined as witchcraft!!

I understood that was what you meant. Same here. I'm completely okay with the magic in Narnia, but the more I find out about Harry Potter the more I am determined to stay away from it. I'm not entirely comfortable with the magic in OUAT, nor with the magic in Merlin. It doesn't bother me so much as not to watch it, but I'm still not entirely comfortable. And with dark themes, it depends on how it's handled. I think that darker themes bring out the hope more than things that are light possibly can. It's like a contrast. A flashlight seems a lot brighter in a dark room than in one with the light on. So I'm good with darker themes, so long as there is also a light of hope shone through. After all, Ilyon itself isn't anywhere close to light and fluffy storytelling. (and now I have Veggie Tales voices in my head saying "light and fluffy!")

I love OUAT, but I'm only on season 2 right now. As for the stuff with magic in the show, well, it doesn't bother me too much. In other stories it does, but I really appreciate Rumple's line, "All magic comes with a price." Magic is quite abused, yes, though not enough to keep me from watching. I like the fairytale retellings more than I can completely block it out for sensitive reasons. *shrugs* The Red episode was weird. I didn't really like it. And it can get pretty dark at times, like in the Frankenstein episode, but it seems to be good against evil overall. Some things I can just decide I don't agree with and move on. I'm nowhere near to finishing it all, so I can't fairly judge it as to whether it's worth going back to for you or not.
With books, I'm more careful. Fairytale magic doesn't seem to bother me, but "wizards" and "spells" in literature do really bother me. It's a lot harder to skip a part in a book than to close your eyes or fast forward in a movie or show. When magic is natural, like in fairytale-world, it doesn't seem like sorcery, because it's just how the world works. So I don't have a problem with it, but maybe that's just me.
I'll have to watch more episodes to see what I really think. But I think that minus the yucky parts, it's a great show.

authormorganhuneke, yeah I'm with you there! Narnia is a favorite of mine!! But like you, I'm determining to stay away from Harry Potter. As for OUAT, I agree ... not being all comfortable with the magic ... And so true!! A certain amount of darkness can really make the light all that more meaningful! Right, just make sure there's light too! Not all dark. amandabeguerie, I do like that line, "All magic comes with a price", because it seems to be saying that magic, the kind of magic Rumple is using, is not okay. Other than dark scenes and the magic feeling iffy, I was really enjoying the show because of yes, the fairytale characters and stuff!! But I started watching it again, and I don't know ... are those happy endings ever going to come? Or are some of our favorites going to somehow succumb to darkness?? I would tend to agree. Movies you can easily skip things, but it's harder with books. And yeah, the fairytale-world kind of thing usually feels pretty innocent to me! Yeah ... we'll see I guess!!

Yes, there absolutely has to be light. And "All magic comes with a price" is a key phrase. It doesn't bother me so much when the villains use magic because then it's obviously bad, it's when the good guys use it that it bugs me. Odd, since Elsa's ice powers and Rapunzel's magic hair don't.
I don't think the happy endings are ever going to come, and here's why. They keep coming up with bad things to happen because without bad stuff happening to them there's no story. However, they're obviously running out of ideas. So I think it'll get cancelled. But I don't think it'll get cancelled in time for them to come up with a good happy ending and film and air it. That rarely happens. So I think they'll have a season ending cliffhanger and it'll end and that'll be it, no happy endings because they didn't get a chance to wrap it up. Anyway, my happy ending isn't canon, so it doesn't matter to me so much.

rayray, it definitely is a long series! The seasons have lots of episodes!! authormorganhuneke, I agree. Frozen and Tangled didn't bother me; but when the "good people" start using magic in Once Upon a Time, it feels a bit different ... Didn't really like it. Well, that's a bit depressing. Ha! Oh well, it's just a TV show after all ...

The "Dark Swan" clip I saw on FB kind of makes me lean towards not.

I LOVED the first episode of Season Five! It was so, so good!! And Hook and Emma!!! Merida, the feisty female Robin Hood! King Arthur! The dagger and its origin!! *mind blown* And then the twist at the end! WOW. It was absolutely fantastic. I actually really am excited to see more of Emma as the Dark One. I like to see her not perfect ... **SPOILER ALERT** the part where she struggles with the darkness ... whether or not to kill Merida in order to save her family ... and then her family and Hook rush in and tell her not to do it, and she doesn't. It was just a powerful moment! I want to see her gain victory over even the darkness inside! **SPOILER ALERT ENDS**
But of course, I don't want her to the Dark One forever. I think her struggle with this will make for a poignant story ... but I'm already hoping for victory and good to win out! And our old Emma to be redeemed, and come back, and marry Hook!!!! Ahhh ... What I want, is a Once Upon a Time told as a Christian allegory. Now that would be spectacular. Anybody up for the task?
However ... the trailer for episode two was looking a little dark. If it gets real creepy, icky, or confusing magic-wise, I might have to stop watching.

It actually wasn't as dark as I expected it to be. There was real darkness, and real struggle, but there was good and light too. I'm still wary of the magic - it might be getting a little too much for my taste. But I guess the scenes that really bother me, are the ones like "Red" (about Little Red Riding Hood) from the first season, and all that stuff going on with Charming's supposed wife being murdered ... the Hansel and Gretel story ... or even the backstory of Cruella Deville. That, to me, is icky dark. And that's what I can't handle. But episode one of season five balanced things nicely, I felt. Well, anyway, I guess we all have our own opinions and feelings! Too bad that it's feeling too dark for you to watch. But who knows, I might be feeling the same way after episode two!
