Huzzah! *throws traditional Ilyon fandom black, silver and blue glitter* Well, we always read a story called... "Follow that Star", I believe? It's a really cute picture book story about a lamb and a nativity scene/pagent We read it at least once every year around Christmas (at LEAST once... more like 20 times )

It's real. We've had only one fake tree, because of my baby sister and she was learning to walk. We didn't want her pulling down a tree on herself.

Oh I love that song! I discovered it a few years ago. It's a good one. Though we don't celebrate Christmas (much to the general awe and appall from many. It's a fairly new decision of ours; past few years), we listen to "Christmas" music, because they're praising our Lord. Or most are, at least.

May I ask why you don't? You're not the first one who I know who doesn't. And also, what do you do during Christmas time? Normal daily things?

I think I know where BladeSpinnerRae is coming from, I knew I guy whose family does the same thing, you and your family have decided to not celebrate Christmas because of all the pagan traditions, all the commercialism of Christmas, because the fact that Christmas was made around pagan holidays. Am I right BladeSpinnerRae ?

LadyErika I appreciate you asking in a nonjudgmental way. And yes, a lot of it has to do with the paganism surrounding it, but even more so is the fact that when you stand back and look at what Christmas is right now, it isn't really honouring Christ or God, or even Jesus' birth really. I know we as Christians say that we're trying to take all the commercialism out of Christmas and just concentrate on Jesus' birth, but if we're honest about it (as my family and I have asked ourselves a lot), Jesus doesn't really have a lot to do with the whole season. It's mostly about Christmas lights, and Christmas trees, and Christmas food, and the presents. Sadly, a lot of people go into debt this time of year buying gifts for family and friends, and that doesn't really honour God. But another reason is that I believe if God wanted us to celebrate His Son's birth, He would have told us to - He would have given us information about it, like the Holy Feasts. The Bible has lots of information about those things, and so I think that if He wanted us to celebrate His birth in particular, He'd have given as much instruction as to how, like the rest of the Holy Days. And instead, like I said, most of what goes on at Christmas time is not about pleasing Him, but rather pleasing ourselves or our families, children, friends, etc. And I'm not saying anyone else should feel this way, or saying everyone that does celebrate Christmas is wrong - not at all. We as a family are just trying to dig a bit deeper on this matter, and this is where we're at so far for now. We grew up celebrating Christmas - this is just something we've been learning about for the last couple years or so. I know all the arguments against this belief, like "God doesn't say anything about celebrating the 4th of July, or Thanksgiving in the Bible either and we still do" but that has nothing to do with Christ. Those are celebrations that came later. We do have lights up, but we put them up as soon as it starts getting dark out in the Fall and leave them up until Spring when it gets lighter. We are learning about the Feast of Dedication which is also this time of year, and we've talked about having a small celebration around January/February with my sister's family just as a family get-together to bring a little fun to the cold and sometimes bleak days of that time of year (she has rambunctious little boys so it's needed!! ). I hope that explains where we're at alright.

But the information about the feasts in the OT are given that way for the Jews, we are not Jews so there is no reason for us to celebrate them, further more the Jews messed up how those feast where suppose to go and the reason for the fast's in the OT was to point to Jesus. But the Jews made them into traditions that did not honor God, and when Jesus came he freed them from the old covenant and gave us a new covenant in which we don't have to follow those told traditions

I had considered bringing up this subject in the discussions thread. Rae, we have people in our church who believe about the same as you. I agree that a lot of what people do isn't particularly honouring to God. But on the other hand God be coming man is a pretty significant thing. It is something we should focus on sometimes. But that certainly isn't what happens often.

Oh and i didn't mean to sound judgemental. Brie D i agree with you. This the time where we remember that the impossible happened, the Infinite God became a finite man *without losing any of divinity* and that is why we celebrate Christmas.

Oh yes, I’m not trying to sound flippant or anything about the miracle of God becoming man – I do think that is definitely something we should focus on! It’s just something we’ve decided to focus on all year round, and not just on one holiday. As for the Feasts from the Bible Aiden , they’re not just for the Jews anymore. In the Bible, they were given to God’s people, and yes the Jew’s are God’s chosen people, but the NT says in several places that we are all grafted in and are His chosen people, Jew and Gentile alike. And yes, Jews have changed the feasts and don’t always celebrate them for the right reasons either just like what happens today, but the Bible doesn’t say to follow them for the Jew’s sake. He gave them to us as a gift. My family and I aren’t fully celebrating them all just yet, but we are studying slowly. There is great importance behind all of His feasts, and they all do point to Jesus, which is really cool. They pointed to His coming to walk the earth the first time, and they continue to point to His second coming. They are foreshadowing's of what’s to come. And Jesus did come to *fulfill* the law, but not to make it void. He frees us from law, and gives us grace, but even He celebrated the Feasts, and the Bible tells us to walk as He walked. I’m not saying that it’s “celebrate the feasts or die” – “There is therefore no condemnation in Christ Jesus” – I believe they were given for our benefit (just like the Sabbath. He gave that for our benefit, not for His. And we are to still honour that). Not something to get caught up in the law of it all. And again, my family and I are still in the process of studying it all, so we don’t follow them word for word. Or sometimes even at all. When/if we do, we want it to be for the right reason in our hearts, not because of laws or traditions. We do it because we love God and we do this to honour Him because we want to, not because we have to. I’m actually thankful for this discussion, because it has helped me in knowing exactly what I believe and why. I don’t want to celebrate the Feasts because of the law or anything related to that. I want to know of them in my heart, as they are in God’s heart.

But that's just it. The observing of the feats is not reiterated in the New Testament so we don't have to do them. And when you think of it all the feat are pointing to the work that Was to come. It was to help them focus on the coming Christ. But since Jesus already came there is no need to observe the feast at all. To me it's almost like saying "yea Jesus i know you came but i want traditions More than your work" because that what the feats are. They are looking at what was to come. Not what already came, i also watch the greay men the Lord has given us, like John MacArthur, Paul Washer and the others, and none to them observe the feats. I am not trying to change your family or what you do, these are just my thoughts on it and i could be totally wrong.

I think that studying the feast is a good thing to do. We don't celebrate them but we have friends who do. it is true that the Bible doesn't clearly say that we should keep the feasts now, but it also doesn't say that we shouldn't. We can fully accept Christ's sacrifice and still keep the feasts. I know Paul went up to Jerusalem for one of the feasts. And then there is the Lord's Supper, which is looking back to Christ's death. Some people say that is the Passover and that's when it should be celebrated.
Anyway we were talking about Christmas. I read an interesting article on creation.com saying that the date of Christmas probably doesn't come from pagan practices, but a Jewish tradition. Supposedly they believed that a prophet would live for a whole number of years. Since life begins at conception, He would be born 9 months after Passover which is about the end of December. I'll put a link to it when I find it.

"To me it's almost like saying "yea Jesus i know you came but i want traditions More than your work" " That sentence really can be said of Christmas, and any other holiday as well. And as far as the great men God gave us and them not celebrating the Feasts, that's true they don't. But I do know that Jesus, Paul, and all the apostles, etc. did celebrate them long after Jesus left them. Some feasts did point to His coming, but some still point to His final return. All the Fall Feasts point to that. And Brie D, thank you for summing it up so nicely. That article sounds interesting, and I'm looking forward to reading it if you can find it. Our radio station plays Christmas music round the clock now - does anyone else have that? (Yes, we only have one Christian station that comes in where we live! )

A friend of mine just told me about a group called Pentatonix, and it's pretty cool. Here's a link to one of my favorite songs by that group. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSUFzC6_fp8

I've been listening to an instrumental album by Phil Keaggy. I also listen to the Christmas Carol collections on librivox.org I've done a couple on there, but I don't think they're very good.

To make Christmas more centered on God, (and since it's supposed to be celebrating Jesus' birth), we should give Jesus a gift. Like do something for the people who have to work on Christmas, or help someone in need. You know how it says somewhere in the Bible, "whatever you do to the least of these, you do it to Me" ? Yea, I just thought that might be a good idea.
