I actually don't hate The General. I find what he does very sad, but I understand his motivation. I think there's a chance that his tough shell will someday open a tiny crack to embrace the truth, and if that happens, he'll be the most powerful witness for Elom that Ilyon ever had. That's one reason I was so excited when {Spoiler for TKS!} Marcus opened up to truth. He's been trained by The General to be as much of a carbon copy of him as possible - and I believe Marcus will also be a most powerful force for Elom. I think The General could be double and triple and quadruple that. Also, look at his good qualities. He's intensely loyal, extremely obedient, dedicated, hard-working, deeply concerned for family, singly focused on a cause, duty-oriented, responsible, diligent, and and excellent leader. It so happens that the focus of these things is misdirected, but the good character is still there. Imagine if all these traits were used by this man in the service of Elom!

That's why I said it's misdirected. He doesn't want to hurt Liam repeatedly; he wants Liam to behave like Marcus and be a success. But he views the "discipline" (torture) as necessary for his good.
He's only hurting his family "for their benefit." His root motivation is their best interest. He cares very much about them succeeding in life. However, it happens that his underlying premises (that loyalty to the country and emperor is good; that worth is determined by personal success) are false. If his premises are corrected, his concern "for their benefit" will be directed into positive channels. Look at Marcus at the beginning of the series vs. Marcus at the end of TKS for a less extreme example.
Sure, there could be other motivations behind General Veshiron's actions as well that we don't know about yet; I'm just speaking for what I've seen in the first few books.

Neither do I. I just don't hate him. Actually, that's an interesting idea: the complexities of villains. It's difficult to create evil characters that retain respectable qualities. It's easy to just make them despicable, terrifying, nauseating, or just plain evil without vestiges of positive character traits. And in reality, humans aren't that simplistic. Because we are created in the image of God, even the worst of us have traces of positive qualities. We're all still human and thus share feelings, motivations, thoughts, needs, desires, attitudes, and driving forces - though we use and respond to them in wildly varying ways. It's easy to look at evil deeds and forget their humanness. While we shouldn't minimize the awfulness of the deed, Christ has died for all and sees all people as worth dying to redeem - not of themselves, but because of that image in God. In summary, that's difficult to portray in writing about a person, especially a fictional character. So I think my response to The General is another factor showing what an excellent job Jaye has done in portraying her villains. Sir Richard? Set on himself and his own comforts and position... doesn't seem to like anyone... a man to be feared, full of self to the exclusion of all others. Goler? Despicable. Mean and little and low. Daican? Cunning, crafty, and cruel, but also understandable - though everything the man stands for is false. Falcor? Treacherous, full of hate, two-faced, cunning, good at putting on two faces - and intent on power. Jasper? Utterly heartless. Likes to use others to advance self at whatever cost to them. Also seems to enjoy the process of inflicting pain on others... Davira? A snake. Devious, treacherous, loathsome, hateful, disconcerting. Slippery and deceitful. Probably very bitter.

That put it very well. We'll obviously have more of Falcor. That makes the future seem scary. Goler worth being afraid of anymore. Trask is out of his power. I suppose Anne and her father a possible targets, but I'm not worried about that now.

Daican and The General were the two villains I despised the most in Ilyon! The other villains are evil but those two grate on me!

Of the Ilyon villains, Falcor and Richard raise the most violent emotion out of me. Falcor because of what he did to William, Tallas and Leetra. Richard because, well, this may seem petty, but Richard would have been my name if I had been a boy, and to see it used on such a vile villain just annoys me to no end.

I would actually love to see the General reform. Not any of the other villains, though. Davira actually scares me the most. The things she could be capable of...

My name would have been Ezequiel Mateo, so I don't see that name a whole lot in stories... but I can compare!

I would have been Michael William or William Henry, and Michael and William are good Altairs. I don't know if I really want The General to reform. I mean, I wish the Altair kids could have a good grandfather, but I still just don't like him. And I hated Falcor too, for his horrible betrayal. I just...ugh. And Davira is pretty scary.

I would have been Richard William, and I love both names. (Honestly, I have an overabundance of Richards and Williams in my writing) So, a vile villain and the Altair's father. I'm an interesting combination.

Anyone know of a villain called Benjamin? That's what I would have got.
As for villains, any Ideas who's going to play the biggest part in the next book.

Well, we have it confirmed that the General will be leading the army against Samara, so I expect a large role from him. Beyond that, I can't say.

Anyone want to discuss our lovely horrible fearsome new villains?
Rothas is a slightly different sort of villain to seen before in his position. Perhaps a little like Richard, but he has a family. I think James may reform. I certainly hope he will. And the Queen of Samara is horrible.
