Spoilers for The Pirate Daughter's Promise may appear in this thread! Skye. Daniel McHenry. William James. Captain Francis Kelley. Promises and treasure and suspense and adventure. Honestly, this book exceeded my expectations. Of course it wasn't quite up there with Ilyon Chronicles, but I was pleasantly surprised at what it was. The plot was slightly simplistic, and the characters could have been defined and developed more, but the writing was engaging, interesting, descriptive, and well done. {Spoiler: TPDP}I knew Daniel wasn't ever hanged as soon as he was introduced... It did seem a little "convenient" that he showed up just when he did. There was an unusual number of miracles in the story which made it seem just slightly unrealistic. However, it did bring out the theme of God's protecting hand very clearly. I very much appreciated how clearly God and truth came through in the story. Skye's depth of relationship with God was excellent. I also appreciated the importance she placed on her promise, even in the face of suffering. That truly brought out her character and who she is. Will and Skye's friendship was very sweet. I didn't quite get how her grandfather changed so quickly, but I appreciated their relationship as well. Kelley was just evil, though I did wonder if there was more complexity to his motivation. It was different to read a Jaye/Molly book that included firearms and it also made me glad that they are not part of Ilyon...

I love TPDP. It was my first Molly/Jaye book, and I think it's a good place to start, since every one of her books gets better. I first borrowed it from a friend, and once I started reading, I wondered why I didn't pay any attention when she had tried to tell me about it before, because it's exactly the sort of thing I like. Despite the fact that they're slightly on the perfect side, I loved Skye and Will.

I read this AFTER the Makilien books, but I still loved it all the same, even though there were a few moments where I had to suspend belief. I need to finish reading the series.

I've only read the sample on Amazon. And for the second book. So I know the spoilers. I may read them someday but at the moment I don't feel like spending a few dollars on them.
