This is a general discussion thread for the Ilyon Chronicles prequel novella, Half-Blood. If you have not read it yet, I do not suggest reading past this point! I'm sure there will be SPOILERS!

So I posted this in the Ilyon Chronicles Goodreads group... We need a secret spoiler board or something. It would seem that the temptation is too great.
And what did you all think about where Jace saw his mother? *cough* *cough* *wink* *wink* xD Somehow my friend saw that on her general updates feed in Goodreads, and now she's convinced that Jace's mom is going to be in the book. I feel so horrible, now.

I loved Half-Blood. The hard part is writing a review without spoilers. I was horrified when Jasper hurt Strune. Even on the second read through. I knew it was coming, but... It was still hard to read. Jaye, do we ever find out who his parents are and if they loved each other or...? I was rather disappointed we didn't find out in Half-Blood.

Strune. Oh, Strune. *cries* Honestly, I wasn't expecting to read anything about Jace's parents... I knew that Half-Blood was only going to have Jace's story from 6-howeveroldheisnow so I suppose it made sense for me to have Jace's parents out of the picture. But I can see with that expectation that it would be a bit disappointing. Later books, hopefully!

Jace is 17 - correct? At least that is what it said in Half-Blood. I don't think it's different in Resistance, since it picks up from there...

In Resistance it starts when he is 17 but then skips 3 years and in the rest of the book he is 20 but I said 20-21 was because i don't know when his birthday is.

Jaye, is it Half-Blood or Half Blood? Hyphen or no hyphen? I've seen you write it both ways: for instance, the title of this thread versus the actual cover. What is correct? Signed, Your Persistent Grammar Nerd

It's Half-Blood. On the cover it looked better to have the two words on separate lines, so I took author liberties and did it that way. *shrugs* But Half-Blood is correct. Well, technically it would be Half-blood, but again, for the title, it looked better to capitalize Blood too.

I was so mad about the bird. So mad. Like, that was the one thing that made me want to throw my Kindle out of everything in the whole book. Kinda weird, I know. It was like that for me in TKS, too...with the dad v.s. Liam and Jace. (Avoiding anything too spoilery since this isn't the TKS spoiler discussion and there's no spoiler tags)

I think GR needs to have an option to not follow all the friends' discussion posts because even the things in a marked spoiler discussion board are hard to avoid in the updates feed! Gah!

The beginning of Half-Blood reminds me slightly of the beginning of By Darkness Hid, by Jill Williamson. I've only noticed that now, though.

Half-Blood was miserable and awesome at the same time. Anybody feel me? Like, I was practically crying and dying, but it was so necessary.

I think we need a poll. "Who wishes to be the instrument bringing about Jasper's demise?"

Now that it's out and the spoiler-people are HOPEFULLY busy reading and not peeking, I'll add my thoughts. Half-Blood. What does one say after finishing such a book? How long must one devote to emotional recovery? I liked Half-Blood. I don’t think I liked it quite as much as Resistance and The King’s Scrolls, but it’s different – it has a different feel, different length, different purpose. Yet it has a very continuous feel to it; it flows with the other books very well. The book was shorter than the others of course, but not so short that it left me unsatisfied and wanting more too badly. I was slightly disappointed to see the nine-year gap between chapter 1 and chapter 2, simply because I wanted to read more of little Jace—but really, we didn’t miss anything. It sounds like everything that happened in those nine years was just more of the same. It tied into Resistance so well! I was riveted from the moment I knew that Jace was about to begin the fight that Rayad witnessed, and that continued through to the end. That was an excellent way to write it. In Resistance, we don’t get to read from Jace’s perspective until a good way in. That may be why it was a bit difficult for me to relate to him in Resistance at first. But in Half Blood, we get Jace’s perspective from the first line straight through to the last line. We get inside of his head. We get to know what he’s been through and what motivates him—why he acts as he does. In Resistance we’re introduced to a quiet, hurting young man who’s wrapped up in his shell. We view him with Rayad’s eyes, with Kyrin’s eyes, with Holden’s eyes and Trask’s eyes and Lady Anne’s eyes. But in Half Blood, we view him through his heart and soul. Yes, he does have a soul. Every action and reaction of his proves it. Strune and the horses are wonderful elements that also help tie this in with the rest of the series. We seriously see how he has quite literally nowhere else to turn. And his befriending Niton, Tyra, and Gem make even more sense now. It’s who he is. I seriously hope Jace gets a new pet Jay sometime. The book didn’t make me cry. The King’s Scrolls does a way better job as far as that goes…but that’s because it’s on such a different level. The pain and emotion and hurt in TKS is different, and in a sense, deeper. It touches something that could make me cry. Half Blood, on the other hand, is full of physical pain and slavery and mistreatment in daily life. It’s awful. It’s a very uncomfortable story to read. But it’s not a crying kind of book for me. {Spoiler!} The closest I came was the awful sad feeling when Strune...you know... I had the feeling it was coming, but it still shocked and stunned and maddened me when it happened. But at the same time, it did provide a good reason for Jace not to have to leave Strune behind when he moved on. I was right there feeling the pain, hurt, and loss with Jace. I grew to love Strune just as Jace did, and I felt the emotion during that scene… even though I was pretty sure from the beginning that Strune couldn’t survive Jasper’s cruelty. There’s something sinister about Jasper forcing Jace to be a monster—and that’s even worse than the dastardly deeds that other types of villains come up with. Even though Jasper doesn’t believe Jace has a soul, he is taking control of Jace’s soul as best he can. Character development was excellent and lays the foundation for the development in the other Ilyon books. Because Half-Blood focuses solely on Jace and his character, there is a lot of depth here that we wouldn’t be able to get in a larger, more complex story with more characters, plots, sub-plots, and dangers. I also greatly enjoyed the character portrayal of Rayad in this story. In Resistance, we see through his eyes. Now we see him from the other viewpoint and we appreciate him that much more. The setting is very realistic. You can feel that you’re in Ilyon, and you know it. The emotion and dialogue were also well done. I could hear Jace in this book in a much more clear way than I could in Resistance—probably because I had no context in Resistance to guide the sound of his voice. I heard only a silent, moody, pained, hurting young man, which was hard to hear without context. Now I hear his heart, his fears, his struggles, and who he is. I could go on... of course... it's Ilyon!
